while i generally make it a point to steer clear of the dark/goth scene, i always had a soft spot in my heart for two of the so called "future pop" bands - seabound and assemblage 23. now both of them have new records, well cds really, out and where seabound have taken the big step and delivered a high-quality electronic pop record, a23 just fall flat into their own muddy goth-trance puddle. which is a shame, as i quite like tom´s voice... as evident on their first album, seabound really shine in their slower, introspective moments, so they and their label (dependent, also from the g-town) have to be applauded for taking the risk, exploring that direction further instead of recording a low-risk dancefloor album. a23, sadly is a case of "same old - maybe even worse". i really wanted to like that record... |
